Transamerica Retirement Solutions Announces 2013 Recipients of the Leaders in Health Care Scholarships

Transamerica Retirement Solutions Awards Promising Health Care Students

HARRISON, NY – July 15, 2013 – As a proud sponsor of the Institute for Diversity in Health Management, Transamerica Retirement Solutions is pleased to present the Leaders in Health Care Scholarship to two students who are pursuing advanced degrees in health care. This year, Ahmed Dagane and Richard J. Martin will each receive a $5,000 award for their work in the health care field.

The Transamerica Retirement Solutions Leaders in Health Care Scholarship is available for first- and second-year graduate students pursuing degrees in health care administration or a comparable degree. Candidates are required to demonstrate a commitment to community service and academic excellence. In addition, they are evaluated on the basis of a personal statement about their interest in health care management and career goals.

Mr. Dagane is currently enrolled in an MBA program for Health Care Management at Concordia University, St. Paul. After receiving an associate's degree in Nursing from Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Mr. Dagane earned a B.A. in General Studies and B.S. in Nursing at Metropolitan State University. He is currently a nurse manager at Hennepin County Adult Detention Center. Mr. Dagane is especially interested in expanding his education, and after he earns his master's degree, he intends to pursue a Ph.D. in Public Health. Fluent in Somali, Kiswahili and Arabic, Mr. Dagane hopes to work for the World Health Organization and use his education and experience to help people around the world.

Mr. Martin is currently pursuing a master's degree in Health Administration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Prior to graduate school, he earned a B.A. in Speech and Communications at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. As the first member of his family to attend college, Mr. Martin strives for academic and professional excellence. As an undergraduate, he achieved high academic honors. Inspired by his childhood mentor, Mr. Martin is committed to being a positive role model in his community and has performed community service for nearly a dozen organizations.

"Over the past nine years, Transamerica Retirement Solutions has awarded the Leaders in Health Care Scholarships in order to acknowledge the accomplishments of two promising health care students," said Brodie Wood, vice president and not-for-profit national practice leader at Transamerica Retirement Solutions. "This year, we honor Ahmed and Richard for their commitment to academics and community service. Their dedication to helping others through their education and training has earned them this scholarship, and we hope that it will help them accomplish their future goals."

About the Institute for Diversity in Health Management In 1994, the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE), and the American Hospital Association (AHA) responded to the lack of diversity in the health care management ranks by founding the Institute for Diversity in Health Management (IFD). The Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (AHHE) and, more recently, the Catholic Health Association (CHA) signed on as sponsors.

The Institute for Diversity in Health Management, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, works closely with health services organizations and educators to expand leadership opportunities for ethnic minorities in health services management. The Institute's mission is to increase the number of people of color in health services administration to better reflect the increasingly diverse communities they serve and to improve opportunities for professionals already in the health care field. To accomplish this, the Institute has designed several initiatives to generate significant long-term results through educational programs, summer internships, professional development and leadership conferences.
